Trouble in Mind: An Unorthodox Introduction to Psychiatry

Medical malady, maladjustment,

misbehavior, or misery?

What are Minds Good For?

Trouble in Mind is drawn from my twenty years of experience as a psychiatric clinician, researcher, and educator at Johns Hopkins University, and uses concepts from the scientific fields of neuroscience and psychology to create a functional model of the mind.

Using non-technical language, I discuss what the mind must do to help us arouse and guide our actions in response to the environment, retain useful information from our experiences, and act intelligently even when we don't have all the information. And, I have linked the model at every level to the dysfunctions that give rise to a wide variety of mental illnesses.
